Help choose the right order of courses!
Sailing
Regardless of course length, you must choose: Step 1 > Step 2 > Step 3. For example: weekend course Step 1 + Archipelago course Step 2 + weekend course Step 3 or weekend course Step 1 + Combined course Step 2-3 (archipelago course Step 2 + weekend course Step 3) or Archipelago course Step 1 + Archipelago course Step 2 + weekend course Step 3 with several options.

Regardless of course length, you must choose:
Inshore Yachtmaster Diploma (Förarintyg)
> Coastal Yachtmaster Diploma (Kustskepparintyg)
> Sea skipper > Class IIV. Alternatively: Sailing Step 1 or 2+ Inshore Yachtmaster Diploma (Förarintyg), Sailing Step 3 + Coastal Yachtmaster Diploma (Kustskepparintyg). Alternatively:
Motorboat
Motorboat course 5-hour manoeuvring course, Motorboat certificate course 2 days, Maneuvering certificate for high-speed boats 2 days.
Inshore Yachtmaster Diploma (Förarintyg)
Choose ABC's Inshore Yachtmaster Diploma (Förarintyg) course with extensive sea practice, ABC's Archipelago courses with sailing & navigation (Inshore Yachtmaster Diploma (Förarintyg)) or ABC's Motorboat Certificate course and Inshore Yachtmaster Diploma (Förarintyg). When the Boat Driving License is introduced, the above course combinations can be combined into a Boat Driving License.
Choose the right level of difficulty and content of your course!
When choosing a course, we advise you to think carefully about:
- What is your purpose for taking the course?
- What previous experience do you have? Compare with the course content that is presented under each course here on the website.
- Is it theoretical knowledge or practical practice or both that you lack?
- Are you afraid when you are on board? Why? Do you have a less than pleasant experience at sea that scared or gave you respect?
- Do you have knowledge or practical experience of the forces that you will be exposed to in different weather conditions at sea? For example. force of the wind on sails and hull, waves lifting the boat, flowing water affecting the hull, force needed to hoist sails and furling sails, knowledge of anchoring and mooring.
- Do you have the patience to repeatedly practice coordination, grip, movement, handling, manoeuvring on board where theory and practice are constantly interspersed or are you more inclined to theoretical sessions with your own practice afterwards? So different pedagogy, methodology and day course programmes.
- What time do you have available for your training? Several intensive courses in a row or a long-term training program?
- What will it cost to achieve the goals you have with your marine interest?
Please note that several of ABC Boat School's / ABC Sailing School's courses with different degrees of difficulty are available with different course lengths. The course content is therefore the same, but the time for practice sessions is then different.
Knowledge requirements for Yachtman´s Diploma 1, 2 and 3.
Step 1, Yachtman´s Diploma 1:
- Sailboat parts and equipment / functions
- The basics of sailing theory
- Hoist, take down, tear, replace and rig sails
- Find the wind eye, promise, fall, strike and jibe
- Steer and tack on cross, half wind, sheet and bilge
- Addition to the buoy and at the jetty as well as in the guest and natural harbor with a motor
- Weighing rules – theory and practice
- The most common knots and their uses
- Maritime safety on board, "Man-overboard" in theory and practice
- The importance of weather for maritime safety
- Navigation: Practical and theoretical archipelago navigation equivalent to Inshore Yachtmaster Diploma (Förarintyg) level
Yachtman´s Diploma 3;
- In-depth knowledge of the boat and its equipment and fitness with regard to sea sailing including safety equipment (see the Norwegian Maritime Administration's recommendation).
- Rig trim – standing rig sufficiently taut but harmonious (without deformation of the hull).
- Advanced sailing theory – changing the shape of the sails, moving the belly, opening and closing sails.
- Rigging and changing sails while underway in changing weather.
- Spinnaker sailing, setting, trimming, jib and take down.
- Sailing in darkness
- Extreme sailing.
- Seamanship such as handling a boat in rough weather; sea lashing and other rough weather preventive safety measures, berthing, use of drift anchors, rigging for towing, the occurrence of knots and emergency rigging and emergency steering in theory.
- "Man-over-table" - training, preferably at sea.
- Wind and weather knowledge, among other things, with regard to route selection. detailing/correcting weather forecasts using local observations.
- Material care: Checking of attachments in the hull and rigging with regard to wear and equipment. Ageing, wear and tear and deformation of sails.
- The owner is expected to be able to independently handle a larger rigged sailboat, inboard and outboard in changing weather conditions.
Step 2, Yachtman´s Diploma 2:
- Repetition of names and functions
- Practical and theoretical archipelago navigation corresponding to the level of Inshore Yachtmaster Diploma (Förarintyg)
- Review of safety details and equipment
- Sailing theory and sail trimming
- Cross, punch and jump technique
- Tearing down the mainsail and changing the foresail while underway
- Maneuvering in tight spaces
- Extension in guest and natural harbor with motor
- Weighing rules in theory and practice
- Seamanship, mooring, anchoring
- Safety on board, "Man-over-board" training
- Practical and theoretical archipelago navigation corresponding to the level of Inshore Yachtmaster Diploma (Förarintyg)
